Driver in city crash terror
Driver’s lucky escape
Published:
A DRIVER cheated death in Aberdeen when his car spun out of control, smashed into a wall and flipped over.
The man’s silver Vauxhall Corsa was left a crumpled mass of metal.
The bonnet and both bumpers were ripped away from the car and it’s wheels were buckled.
Petrol was also leaking from the wreckage.
The Corsa also tore down a 20ft lamppost as it spun out of control in rush hour traffic.
But somehow the 31-year-old driver escaped serious injuries.
One 38-year-old passer-by said: “The car was completely wrecked. The front of the Corsa was all smashed in. It was a terrible sight.
“There is no way you would think anyone would be able to walk out of that and be okay. He was an extremely lucky man.
“I am sure everyone thought the worst when they saw the accident.
“He was lying on the road at the side of the car and all the police, ambulance and fire officers were at his side. It was just awful.”
Police said witnesses saw the driver lose control of the Corsa and smash into a wall before it flipped over.
The crash happened on the A944 Aberdeen to Westhill road at 4.40pm yesterday.
Police, an ambulance, a doctor and two fire engines were scrambled to the scene, which happened near the Five Mile Garage.
A Grampian Police officer at the scene said the man was conscious when an ambulance crew took him to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at around 5.30pm.
He said his injuries were not thought to be serious.
The westbound carriageway was blocked and vehicles were diverted through Brodiach.
PC Gary Donald, who was at the crash scene, said: “The smash happened at a busy commuter time when there was a lot of traffic on the roads.”
One Aberdeen resident said: “The road was blocked up with traffic for about an hour and a half. It was backed up right outside my door and wasn't moving at all.”
Jean Pirie, 70, from nearby Backhill farm owns land surrounding the crash site.
She said: “It’s a real accident black spot.
“People don’t stick to the 70mph limit at all.”
The carriageway was reopened by 8pm.
