Boathouse Cafe: Old Pier, Stonehaven Harbour
Published:
EVERY so often my beloved’s four-year-old and I head off to feed the ducks.
She calls these missions our “adventures”.
But on a recent Sunday we actually had a real adventure, by going somewhere we’ve never been before – the Boathouse.
Tucked away at the back of the MRI building in the harbour, it has one of the finest views in Stonehaven. Big picture windows look across the wide sweep of the bay. There are even binoculars to help you enjoy the scenery.
The menu is, it has to be said, snack and light bite driven as befits a cafe that closes at 4.30pm. But the specials did include things like chilli.
However, I was tempted by the ham and cheese panini (£3.80), while the little one had her customary cheese sandwich. There’s no kids’ menu, but the staff were happy to make a half portion sandwich for only £1.85. Bargain.
My panini was just the badger to fend off the winter chill, warm and filling with real ham, none of that plastic stuff. My latte (£1.75) was one of the finer examples you’ll find around Stonehaven. I was even tempted to sample a bottle of the Cairngorm Wildcat (£2.60) one of a range of real ales on offer.
Meanwhile, the wee one was fascinated with the wee bell that signalled food was ready. And she was chuffed when the staff said she could ring it – and the big decorative ship’s bell.
Little wonder the Boathouse is now on my favourite places in Stonehaven list.
