The Prince of Wales: St Nicholas Lane, Aberdeen

Published:

EATING at the Prince of Wales is like going back in time.

Not only is it a “proper” pub serving “proper” food unlike so many other places nowadays, but it takes me back to those halcyon days of my youth.

You see, ordering your grub here is like being back at school. You go up and pick up a tray, order what you want at the hatch, pick up your cutlery and then pay.

Simple!

However, if only my school served food like they do at the Prince.

It was lovely.

For me, the only feasible option in a pub is the steak pie. So why change the habit of lifetime?

A huge slice straight out of the oven, accompanied with chips and veg for £4.60.

A nice fluffy pastry on top of huge slices of meat in a nice, thick gravy sauce.

Beautiful.

On the downside, however, the veg (consisting of peas, carrots and sweetcorn) did appear to be out of a supermarket packet.

But who cares when you have such a nice pie?

My pal, ironically a school friend of mine, went for his favourite – beef olives again with chips and veg (£4.80).

His portion was nearly as big as mine, but unfortunately his two olives (packed with oatmeal) were a bit dry. However he had been offered extra gravy and refused.

A fine feed with a fine choice of ales too.
