The Howff: Union Street, Aberdeen

OKAY, I have to admit I was less than impressed when my husband suggested The Howff for our supper.

It may be one of the last “proper” pubs on Union Street, but I’d had in mind something a bit fancier.

I even pulled a face and went in a major sulk – despite the efforts of the cheery bar waiter – as we ordered from the varied selection on the menu.

But when my macaroni cheese (£5.65) and my husband’s home-made fish cakes (£6.50) arrived I was pleasantly surprised.

In fact, let’s make that delighted.

My bowlful of tasty and creamy macca-cheese was enough for three.

All that, plus it was presented with a generous and attractive side salad that some places would pass off as a meal on its own.

The fishcakes my husband chose were huge and bursting with the flavours of smoked fish, salmon and white fish. Just the way a proper fish pie should be made.

They came with baby potatoes and really tasty veg.

As I tried to avoid my other half’s “told you so” look, I had to end my meal with a huge slice of humble pie.

Especially as my only disappointment was spying the other delicious offerings on the chalk board after we’d already ordered our meals.
