Northern Bar: George Street, Aberdeen
Published:
MY LITTLE brother was staying with me for the weekend, which apparently meant I had to supply him with food.
With my cupboards as bare as his wallet, he decided I should treat him to dinner.
And the Northern Bar – my local – was the obvious choice for a bite to eat.
Actually, it appeared it was the obvious choice for a lot of people as we struggled to find a table in the newly-renovated lounge section. And when our starters arrived, it was easy to see why.
My perfectly-spiced Taste of Haggis (£2.65) was an extremely generous portion of the Scottish favourite, complete with the compulsory neeps and tatties, and my brother’s nachos (£3.45) were heaped with cheese, sour cream and sweet chilli sauce.
If that hadn’t cheered me up, the news that we could get two main courses for £8.95 certainly did.
I plumped for the Cumberland sausage with wholegrain mustard mash, all smothered in a rich onion gravy.
It was a really tasty twist on the usual bangers and mash, with the mustard mash adding a real kick.
My brother decided not to break with tradition and went for his customary steak burger, which came with chips and a salad and was duly demolished.
