Underground club to shut down

AN UNDERGROUND music venue is set to be turned into a hotel when it closes its doors this month.
Kef, a drum and bass venue on Aberdeen’s Belmont Street, will be closing for the final time on Saturday, April 19.
Formerly known as Glow 303 and Lava, it has been at the centre of Aberdeen’s underground music scene for more than 10 years.
Based on two floors with a stage for DJs and bands, it has seen many artists perform including We Are Scientists and Franz Ferdinand. It is a joint venture with neighbouring bar, Siberia Wodka Bar, both owned by Harding Ltd. But the bar is set to remain open.
Angela Stirling, manager of the two bars said: “Over the last 10 years the music scene has changed considerably and the venue is no longer sustainable as a business.
“It is very sad it is closing because there is no other drum and bass venue in the city but we have to move on.
“There is a huge demand for accommodation in Aberdeen right now so it will be turned into a hotel with 13 serviced rooms aimed at the offshore market.
“This should be ready by October or November and has been taken on by the owners.”
Despite Siberia Wodka Bar being next door to the club, it is thought that Kef’s closure will not affect business.
She added: “The bar has a very different crowd coming in and it’s definitely not a bar which feeds off of the Kef crowds.
“The bar has many exciting plans coming up.
“We’re excited about all of the new plans.”
