RESIDENTS fought to save their homes as torrential rain battered the North-east and rivers threatened to burst their banks.

A flood alert was issued for Aberdeenshire as rain lashed homes and swelled rivers across the area.

And worried residents in Stonehaven, which was hit by devastating floods in 2009, battled to protect their properties with sandbags.

Aberdeenshire Council identified potential rescue centres as the River Carron looked likely to burst its banks.
