Tom Watson unveils plaque on Turnberry course

Memento commemorates victory over Jack Nicklaus

TOM Watson has been honoured by Turnberry Resort, the venue where he completed one of the most memorable victories of his career.

The multiple Major champion, one of the greatest competitors in the history of the professional game, unveiled a plaque on the 18th fairway of the Ailsa Course to commemorate the 178-yard seven iron approach to two feet which sealed his victory in the 1977 Open.

Watson beat Jack Nicklaus 35 years ago in what has become known as the Duel in the Sun.

The 1977 Open is often considered one of the most compelling championships in the history of golf, with Watson and Nicklaus finishing well ahead of the rest of the field. The two matched each other until the 18th hole when Watson sank a two-foot putt to take the title by one stroke.

“It is definitely a special moment,” said Watson.
