Downton Abbey in the running for Emmy Award

Drama leads British nominations at US TV awards

HIT period drama Downton Abbey has been nominated for the top honour at America’s coveted Emmy Awards.

The successful ITV1 series is up for the Best Drama prize, where it faces stiff competition from US shows including Mad Men, Homeland, Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire.

Joanne Froggatt, who plays domestic servant Anna, is also nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series category along with her ITV co-star Maggie Smith who plays the grand Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Other British nominees include Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and Idris Elba for Luther.

And celebrity chef Jamie Oliver gets a nod in the Outstanding Reality Programme category for Jamie’s Food Revolution.

The awards are presented at a ceremony on September 23.
