ABERDEEN City Council chiefs claimed today they were looking to net a national football academy – after trying to boot out moves for a community stadium in Cove.

Labour leaders in Aberdeen rejected measures that would have paved the way for Cove Rangers to build a new ground at Calder Park, which already has planning permission.

Councillors narrowly voted by eight to seven to reject the recommendation that the new ground be built, but five members of the committee were able to refer a final decision to full council on August 22.

Today, finance and resources committee convener Willie Young defended Aberdeen City Council’s decision, despite admitting officers had yet to speak to the Scottish Football Association about creating a new football facility in the city.
