Cross Keys: Back Street, Peterhead

WHEN it comes to pub grub, sometimes all you’re after is a really good burger.
And at the Cross Keys in Peterhead, I found exactly that.
Although I love a burger now and then, I don’t order them very often. But today, I decided to indulge my craving and go the whole hog.
In anticipation of the main event, I went for a starter of southern-fried-style chicken strips, which came with Reggae Reggae mayonnaise (£3.40). As the opening act, the peppery, crispy-coated chicken was impressive.
When my main course arrived, I’m pretty sure the waitress could detect the look of surprise on my face. This was the gourmet 6oz beef burger – which came topped with two slices of bacon, a Stilton, Shropshire Blue and spring onion sauce, and a few beer-battered onion rings (£6.59).
It was as huge as it sounds, towering on the plate in front of me. It was burger heaven.
The thick, juicy patty had a subtle char-gilled flavour, which was complemented by the rich cheese sauce and the smoky bacon. It came with chips, a few more onion rings and salsa. It was a fantastic feast and my burger cravings were well and truly sated ... for the time being.
Thankfully, now I know where to go when those cravings kick in once again.
