Sizzling Wok: Queens Links Leisure Park, Aberdeen

AS AVID lovers of Chinese cuisine, we felt it was only polite to celebrate their New Year with a takeaway.

Frankly, it would have been rude not to.

We tracked down the Sizzling Wok, a new place down at the beach, and decided to give it a whirl.

We opted for a couple of starters to share. The salt and chilli prawns (£4.20) were plump critters with a pleasantly spicy kick, but the real revelation was the smoked corn chicken.

Morsels of meat in a crispy coating, it was incredibly moreish and at £2.80 for a packed container of the stuff it was a bit of a bargain too.

On to the mains, and my (Chinese) New Year Resolution to be a bit more adventurous with my choice of dish went out the window with the chilli shredded beef (£4.30).

But why would I change my ways when my favourite is done as well as this – with crispy yet meaty strips of beef doused in a tangy sauce, complete with loads of fresh-tasting vegetables and chillis.

My fiancee was pretty chuffed with her Szechuan chicken (£4.50). The sauce was thin but still packed plenty of flavour, and her only real gripe was the absence of the cashew nuts she was promised in the menu.

However, all in all it was a delicious feast, which with two portions of egg fried rice came to £20.20.

A new year, a new takeaway – and a new favourite for us.
