NEW striker Andrius Velicka today claimed signing for Aberdeen FC can re-ignite his career.

The Lithuanian has moved to Aberdeen FC on a season-long loan deal from Rangers, with Richard Foster heading in the opposite direction.

Velicka insisted he is ready to hit the goal trail after battling back from a serious knee injury.

He said: “I have not played much recently. I need to kick-start my career to show that I can come back from injury.”

“I want to prove to myself I can still play and that my knee is okay.

“Of course I am happy to sign for Aberdeen FC. I need the opportunity to get games.

“I don’t want to make any predictions. I just want to play, score goals and win matches.

“Aberdeen are a good team and the games against them were always tough.”

The 31-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his first game on loan at Bristol City last season.

He managed only 11 minutes of a 1-0 win against QPR before being carried off.

Despite his lack recent lack of match action, Velicka is in the Lithuania squad that will face Scotland in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday.

The forward hopes to overcome an ankle knock in time to play.

Speaking to the Evening Express from the Lithuanian team camp, Velicka said: “It will be strange playing against Scotland because I know most of the guys. Some of them are my friends.

“But I am playing for my country and need to show that I can still score goals at a high level.”

Graig Masson what I was saying yesterday it doesnt matter how well we have started off we cant rely on midfielders and defenders to get the goals, this has been the case for the last two seasons. The Strikers(sorry Bill)get paid to put the ball in the Onion Bag and they are not doing it.If they dont score on a regular basis we are back to square one again...

Theres the slight matter of SERVICE to the strikers and with a squad with no attacking central midfielder, no fullbacks and two frequently injured wingers I fail to see how even having a squad with 8 strikers in it is going to make the slightest bit of difference. We keep hearing about 4-5-1, wouldn't a few more midfielders be more use for that formation than yet another striker???

Colin - Lets hope Velicka can succeed where so many dons strikers have failed because as you say without a consistent striker things look bleak. We are extremely stretched at the back now, to my knowledge we have no established wing-backs now with Foster gone. All the more cause to get this guy Bassey in. I've been hearing rumours about Gow signing for us, anyone know if there is any truth in that?

Steve, I've heard same as you about Gow coming in, after his transfer yday collapsed. Dave - MM stated in April that he wants Mackie to move into an attacking central midfield position. MM's thoughts were clearly on having Aluko, Fyvie, Mackie in midfield...all attacking players! Gow is on the radar after Fyvie's injury? With Hartley as the holding player in the heart of the pitch. As Velicka states, Hartley set up most of his goals at Hearts. These players know how the other works. As for Paton, goodness knows what he's playing at, think he's just committed career suicide. MM clearly fancies Maguire as a better player than last season, Magennis is one for the future, as is Megisson. Mackie is no longer going to be used as a striker if he wants a future at the club. That's MM's words in April, not mine.

I've also heard the Alan Gow rumour. This switch is a gamble for AFC but could prove a good move. Foster is a decent player, particularly with the versatility he offers, and it is a must that we bring in a suitable defensive replacement. If he does get much a chance at Rangers (doubtful) then the good news is they'll need to pay a fee to sign him. While we have a glut of forwards at the club, clearly WM isn't confident any of them are the proven goalscorer we need. Velicka was a fine player for Hearts (reminds me of Stavrum), did well in Norway and didn't get much of a chance at Rangers. I'd expect Rangers will still be picking up his wage bill. I really hope he can be a cracking signing for us!

Seeing as my last post was removed... you can't even make a joke on this site now. I was saying I think *they* have come away from this with a better deal thasn ourselves on the face of it. Foster was a home-grown player and a key member of our squad. Velicka is a surplus to requirements player from them, unproven and returning from serious injury. We ought to have come away with a second player from this deal. WM must be a pushover at the table.

Paul - I expect Rangers are covering a lot more in terms of wages, possibly paying both players wages, so that at least should free up some cash to sign Basey.

Mackie an attacking midfield player? Did you actually read that after you wrote it? He's not much cop in his own position so hows it going to be better playing him out of position instead? McGhee also said Foster was going to be a winger and look how thats worked out. Haven't you learned yet? McGhee says alot of things, and most of them are just hot air trying to convince the world he knows what he's doing which clearly he doesn't.
