Aberdeen FC boss McGhee stands firm with his 4-5-1 system

Mark will stick with formation

ABERDEEN FC boss Mark McGhee plans to stick with his 4-5-1 formation, despite their failure to beat Kilmarnock at Pittodrie.

McGhee admitted the lack of contribution from strikers Josh Magennis, Chris Maguire and Darren Mackie was “the most disappointing aspect” of the 1-0 defeat by Killie, which saw Aberdeen FC slip from first to third in the SPL.

The formation, which is set up to encourage the three strikers supported by at least one attacking midfielder to get forward when Aberdeen are in possession, helped them win their first three matches of the campaign.

They also recorded three clean sheets because the set-up allowed skipper Paul Hartley and Yoann Folly to offer more protection to the back four.

The formation didn’t work so well against Killie but McGhee plans to persist with it because he believes it’s the one best suited to the squad he now has at his disposal.

McGhee said: “The formation gives us the chance to get more strikers on the pitch, which is something I’ve always been in favour of.

“It’s the way we played when I was at Motherwell and it worked well for them.

It doesnt matter what the systemn is its the failure of our strikers(no matter who we play up front)to put it in the net. Were the same as last season there. Oh for a 20 goal a season man again.. King Joey Harper Frank McDougall Eric Black. Even the lovable Ernie Winchester was better than these guys who cant hit a barn door.

I'm unsure how the phrases 'three strikers' and '4-5-1 formation' make sense in the same sentence?! When McGhee joined he wanted to play 4-3-3. Is this what we are aiming for or what?

I shall go MENTAL if anyone at AFC is ever described as a striker again - NOT ONE OF THEM ARE - they r forwards and limited ones at that.

Agree with Colin, its the quality up front thats lacking, Mackie, Maguire in particular. Magennis hasnt had the impact I think we were all hoping for, then there is Meginsson to. Maybe its something to do with strikers whose surname begins with "M" cause Miller hardly set the heather on fire in terms of goals either did he!! Send Megginson and Mackie out on loan and play Paton, least his name begins with a "P"!!

Not even 7 days ago we were the best team in the world. MM was back to being an excellent manager and the team were going places. After 1 result, just 1 result we are all back doom and gloom. Can we please stand by the team. There has to be trust in what MM is doing or else we spoil it for everyone. There is obviously something that the coaching staff have seen to say that megginson and others are getting the nod in front of paton. As for the formation he has to stick with it as it has worked in the previous games, there is no point chopping and changing after one match.

Craig - were u there on Sat?????? - lumping long balls towards the front - Megginson has something?? - he may have, but they said that about Mackie and he STILL gets games in front of everyone else. Do u honestly think Megginson, Vernon, Mackie, r better than Paton???? - answer honestly now. The team is based on Hartley - when he is out of it AFC r out of it and that does not bode well for the rest of what looks like another long, boring, season.

Yes I was there. I agree with you that when Hartley isnt playing then we struggle. We have to keep the likes of Hartley and Aluko fit if we are going to have a good season, in fact the squad is that thin we have to keep them all fit! I just feel that after just one result some supporters are too quick to write our season off. If anyone said to me that we would have 6 points in the bag and through to the next round of the cup before the international break before the season started I would have taken it, Im sure everyone would after last season. After the first round of games are completed we will have a better idea of how we have improved or not.
