Dundee pull out of loan deal for Aberdeen FC’s Paton

Move is blow for new signings

DUNDEE today pulled the plug on their bid to get Aberdeen FC striker Michael Paton on loan.

The move is a blow to Aberdeen FC boss Mark McGhee’s chances of making fresh signings ahead of the transfer window closing at midnight.

McGhee said: “Any business we hope to do hinges on getting a player out.”

Paton had expressed reluctance about the prospect of going to Dens Park on loan until January.

McGhee hoped talks with the 21-year-old at Pittodrie today would persuade Paton that the loan deal would benefit his career in the long term.

But Dundee took matters out of his hands by confirming that they no longer want Paton because he admitted he isn’t committed to their cause.

The Dark Blues are furious because they spent close to a week waiting for the loan deal for Paton to be completed.

They now faced a frantic race against time to sign another striker before the transfer window closes.

The collapse of the Paton loan deal also harmed McGhee’s hopes of completing moves for former Charlton Athletic full-back Grant Basey and Aston Villa reserve striker Jim Collins.

McGhee needs to loan Paton out to create funds to make signings.

This is pretty unfair on Paton. Based on last season his goals per game ratio is higher than Maguire or Mackie and suddenly Megginson is ahead of him in the pecking order too. Based on what I've seen so far there is no evidence that Maguire has returned from his spell at Kilmarnock a better player than the one that left on loan. And- particularly given Fyvie's injury added to our lack of cutting edge on Saturday- unless Foster leaves, why on earth are we adding a third left back in Basey when Considine and Foster leave us well covered and it's clear we need more midfield invention?

Maguire has come back a better player????? - WHO is MM trying to kid - he is another Mackie plain and simple. As for Paton - how wanted does he feel now - go to Dundee son - rattle in goals and get a transfer to a club that appears to want u - which is not AFC. U r right Russell.

Maguire coming back a better player is rubbish, I dont see any improvement at all. Even if he has, Paton is still better. Paton was beginning to establish himself in the first team last season, one of the very few highlights last season as well. Yet Meginnson gets in ahead of him, I dont get it. You do wonder if this is a case of "if the face fits", a bit like Lovell with Calderwood. I can already see Paton coming back to haunt us in a cup game in future seasons.
