HUNDREDS of little feet have graced the corridors of the Jenkins family home at one time or another.
That’s because up until six years ago, this lovely property was Kildrummy Primary School.
Now lovingly converted into a spectacular modern home, it’s aptly named The Old School and dates back to the 18th century.
“The location was the big thing for us,” said Karen, 45.
“It’s quiet with a country location and even our neighbours are 15 minutes away. It has an air of peace and tranquility to it.”
Karen and husband 49-year-old John, both prison officers, share the four-bedroom house with son Ross, 18.
And they have made the most of rural life since moving there from Kintore.
“There’s lots of space here and I rear chickens outside so we have fresh eggs each day,” said Karen.
“I also breed Westie pups and keep a breeding pair, Bonnie and Clyde, as well as our pet German Pointer, Duke.”
The property itself is fascinating, with unique characteristics that you won’t find anywhere else.
Formerly a two-classroom school, these rooms now form part of the spacious living accommodation on offer.
One of the classrooms has been split and now forms the main living room and one of the bedrooms, while the other has been converted into the master bedroom and entrance.
And the family room has its very own special character.
“The family room was once the old school toilets, so we refer to that room as The Chambers,” said Karen, laughing.
“The fact that the house used to be a school means that when you walk in it has an almost warren-like feel, with corridors in front of you.
“But it’s also very light and bright as there are so many windows, in some rooms on almost every wall.
“We’ve also kept the old coat rail in the entrance room which makes a nice feature.”
Karen and John were lucky enough to buy this property from the developer who carried out the conversion work six years ago.
They have concentrated their own efforts in getting the garden planted and landscaped at the front.
With son Ross due to leave home in the near future, Karen and John are looking to downsize now.
“We’ve made the most of all the space while we’ve been here,” she added.
“We’ve had family here to stay with us and at one point I had 22 people sleeping here.
“It’s a big, spacious home that will be perfect for a family – unfortunately it’s just going to be too big for us.”
School’s out!
