ABERDEEN FC are on the trail of towering Montenegro defender Nikola Vujadinovic.
The 6ft 3in left-back is currently at Serie A side Udinese who signed him for £750,000.
Sources confirmed Aberdeen FC boss Mark McGhee is keen to have a look at the defender, which could harm Charlton Athletic left-back Grant Basey’s chances of winning a contract with the club.
McGhee hopes to take Vujadinovic in on trial before deciding if he will offer him a contract.
The Aberdeen FC boss admitted earlier this week that his transfer budget “had been exhausted”.
But the Italians are understood to be willing to pay part of the defender’s wages in an effort to get a deal done.
The 24-year-old, who can play left-back or centre-back, began his career at Partisan Belgrade before spells at FK Zeta and CSKA Sofia.
He was on loan at Romanian top flight side Unirea Alba Iulia last season.
Vujadinovic has been capped six times for the Montenegro U-21 side.
The move is McGhee’s latest bid to bring in an established left-back to bolster his squad.
McGhee has also been tracking former Charlton left-back Grant Basey who impressed on trial at Pittodrie.
But McGhee needs to put players out on loan to free up funds to broker a deal.
With the transfer window set to close on August 31, Basey accepted the offer of a trial at Gillingham.
But Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler said: “Basey is not for us at this moment in time.”
