JIMMY Calderwood today insisted Scotland must look to Holland to have any chance of ending their dismal slump.
Scotland have not qualified for a major tournament since the World Cup in France 1998.
National boss Craig Levein begins the bid to end that damning run with a Euro qualifier against Lithuania at the Darius Girenas Stadium, Kaunas.
Former Aberdeen FC boss Calderwood fears Scotland will sink further into the international doldrums unless they adopt the system used by World Cup finalists Holland.
That would need extensive investment and a massive leap of faith from the SFA.
Calderwood, who spent nearly two decades in the Netherlands, said: “We can learn so much from the set up of Dutch football which is light years ahead of us.”
