ABERDEEN FC strikers were today warned they will have to fight for the right to still be at Pittodrie when the new season starts.

Boss Mark McGhee has taken in Scott Vernon on a two-year deal and the big man is viewed as a potential replacement for Lee Miller.

He has also taken Aston Villa youngster Jim Collins on trial, with a view to sorting out a season-long loan deal at Aberdeen FC.

The 19-year-old, who was born in England but has been capped at Under-21 level for the Republic of Ireland, impressed when he came on as a substitute in the 1-1 friendly draw at Tamworth.

Josh Magennis, who was signed last week, Darren Mackie, Chris Maguire, Michael Paton and Mitch Megginson also featured in the game against the Blue Square Premier League side.

It means McGhee will soon have seven strikers in his first team squad and he admits that will be too many to carry.

“It’s clear we are going to have to filter them out a bit and decide who’s going to be best suited to play,” said McGhee.

“Whatever we decide it’s looking as if some of the others may have to go out on loan if they want a regular game.

“They can’t have that many sitting on the sidelines for most of the season.”

This so called article about AFC hitmen is surely a joke - can any supporter name any `Hitmen ` at Pittodrie - I really do despair at such utter tripe being written.

Certainly Mackie didn't fall into that category. Infact before the Tamworth game he hadn't featured in any of the the other pre-season games. I had hoped that was an indication the MM was moving him on. But lets not shoot the new guys down just yet, Bill. All my hopes for this season are pinned on the hopes that they ARE AFC's new hitmen. 'Mon the Dons!!

When Dingus was speaking today, he talked about competition for places up front & mentioned every striker's name except Mackie's. Could've been an honest mistake or maybe the Dazzler will finally be given the heave ho.
