THERE can be few grander entrances to a property than that of Atholhill House.
The handsome granite building sits proudly at the end of a sweeping, shrub-lined driveway, through a set of wide iron gates.
And the design of the C-listed building has been officially recognised in a book celebrating the historic architecture of the North-east.
Aberdeenshire: Donside and Strathbogie an Illustrated Architectural Guide highlights Atholhill House, which dates back to 1830, as a stunning example of period design.
Of course for the Hope family, it’s simply been known as home.
Dad-of-four Matthew, 39, said: “The house has been used for a variety of purposes since it was first built and when we bought it it had been a holiday let as part of the Udny and Dudwick Estate.
“It was actually split into two flats at that time and we combined them into one house. We were attracted to the layout of the property, and in particular the big garden and all the privacy it offered.”
Matthew, a surgeon based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and his wife Liz, 40, bought and converted the home eight years ago.
And it has been a bright and peaceful setting for the couple and their four children – Finn, 16, Holly, 14, Cailean, 11, and eight-year-old Lucy.
The grounds of the house are simply magnificent, extending to half an acre of land and include a sheltered courtyard with a picnic table and bench.
And those who enjoy gardening will appreciate the huge variety of trees and bushes which include lilac, laburnum, holly and rhododendron.
Inside, the accommodation spans three floors with a number of standout rooms.
The kitchen is just one of the spectacular rooms, with its lovely rustic style complete with Aga cooker.
Matthew, who also works as a sailing instructor, said: “We have Caithness slate flooring with underfloor heating in the kitchen.
“This is my favourite room and we have a big dining table which you can fit 10 people around.
“It’s a very sociable focal point of the house.”
The lounge is also big and bright, perfect for relaxing in and appreciating the traditional features such as the original fireplace and sash windows with working shutters.
Each of the five bedrooms have been decorated to give them their own individual character, making this a warm family-centred home.
Outside the garage has the added attraction of its own rooms above, perfect for use as a guest flat, games room or an office.
But while the Hopes have enjoyed their peaceful location on the edge of Udny Green, they are off to the other side of the world and will have a new coastline to explore.
Matthew said: “We are preparing to move to Queensland, Australia.
“We will be swapping one North-east for another.”
