Molly’s Bistro: Market Street, Aberdeen

IT’S always a quandary when you stumble unexpectedly across somewhere serving really good food.

Do you shout it from the rooftops, or keep it your own special secret?

From its wide-ranging menu to the slick service, Molly’s Bistro deserves a shout.

My smoked haddock rarebit on soda bread (£4) was one of the tastiest starters I’ve had in a long time.

My husband, on the other hand, was at first a bit miffed at the size of his tiny bruschetta topped with basil and tomato chutney (£4), but what it lacked in size it more than made up for in flavour.

And he was equally impressed with the taste of his main choice – sea salt and vinegar battered haddock (£9.50). The freshest of fish was wrapped in the crispiest of batters, coming with whoppers of chunky chips and tasty pea puree. It got a big thumbs up.

But my choice turned out to be a real surprise. I had expected my fish dish to have the microscopic portion of sea bass restaurants usually serve up. I was wrong. Three grilled fillets came piled on a warm salad of wilted spinach, cherry tomatoes and cubed potatoes, drizzled with basil oil (£6.50). Cooked to perfection ... even thinking about it now makes my mouth water ... it was a triumph of tastes.

We can’t wait to go back and sample more of Molly’s menu.
