SIR Alex Ferguson could be on his way out of Manchester United at the end of next season.
It has been reported that Ferguson has informed United that he will quit the club next summer, six months before his 70th birthday.
Ferguson has been at the helm at Old Trafford since he left Aberdeen FC for the club in 1986.
Since then he has led the club to unprecedented success, including 11 league titles and two Champions League trophies.
United have yet to decide on a replacement for Ferguson who has built a dynasty stretching back 25 years.
Jose Mourinho is seen as the ideal candidate.
The former Chelsea manager has led Inter Milan to the Italian league title.
Inter are currently in the semi-finals of the Champions League, and Mourinho has indicated he would be keen to manage in England again.
It was understood United chiefs are already canvassing opinion among leading football figures about who would be the best candidate to replace Ferguson.
It was understood Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola is on United’s radar.
The 39-year-old led Barcelona to Champions League glory over Manchester United in the final last year.
He also steered the Catalans to the La Liga title and the Copa del Ray.
Ferguson previously announced he was set to retire at the end of the 2001/02 season.
But he opted to remain at the club and rebuild the squad.
