Mains of Balquharn: Portlethen

REGULAR as clockwork as a kid, my family sat down to a traditional roast dinner every Sunday.

I decided to roll back the years, and go for a Sunday dinner with all the trimmings.

The friendly Mains of Balquharn, which offers a two-course roast dinner for just £9, fitted the bill for this trip down a culinary memory lane.

My girlfriend opted for the turkey from a selection that also included pork and roast beef.

The succulent meat melted in her mouth and was quickly polished off, earning it a huge thumbs up from her.

It didn’t hurt at all that her turkey arrived with golden brown roast potatoes, vegetables and two light and fluffy Yorkshire puddings.

I plumped for the Vegetable Wellington, thick pastry packed with sauteed mushrooms, onions, spinach and chestnuts.

The concoction was held together by creamy goats’ cheese, and was lovely.

Again it came with veg, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. My only gripe is that there was not enough gravy.

We both opted for apple pie with ice-cream for the sweet, which went down well with the pair of us.

With a pint of lager and a diet coke, the bill came to just over £22.
