THE devastated wife of a man killed by two Aberdeen drug addicts has told how her “living nightmare” began the day his body was found.
Alan Bennett was stabbed to death in an Aberdeen lane on May 30 last year.
Paul Balgowan has been convicted of killing the 56-year-old Cove man with a knife and Julie Carroll previously admitted leading Mr Bennett to his death.
Gillian Bennett, who was married to insurance broker Alan for 19 years, has told how her “adored” husband did not deserve to die.
Mrs Bennett said the lives of her and her family had “changed forever” as a result of Balgowan and Carroll’s “cruel” actions.
And Advocate Depute Iain McSporran said the pair’s conflicting versions of what happened on Oldmill Road meant Mrs Bennett would never know the full truth about her husband’s death.
The grieving widow also hit out at those who carry knives.
“A living nightmare began on May 30 last year, simply because Paul Balgowan had a knife,” she said.
“It is unacceptable that anyone should be carrying a knife.”
Mrs Bennett paid tribute to her “devoted” husband and said he “will always be missed”.
She said: “He was a much-loved brother and uncle who was adored by his close family and friends.
“He was an unassuming man who always made time for everyone, no matter what.”
Mrs Bennett said the good-natured businessman had enjoyed a happy family and social life.”
