NEW York emergency teams made ill by the dust from the aftermath of the World Trade Center terror attack won a £435 million ($657.5m) compensation deal today.

The deal was struck by lawyers representing New York City, construction companies and more than 10,000 Ground Zero rescue and recovery workers, after years of court wrangling.

Today the Ground Zero deal still had to be approved by a judge and the New York workers themselves.

Many workers suffered asthma-like problems after working at Ground Zero, but others claimed for illnesses including cancer.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg called the settlement “a fair and reasonable resolution to a complex set of circumstances”.
