DETECTIVES were today working to establish how a woman believed to be a missing Dundee mum met her death.

A body thought to be that of Mary McLaren, 34, was found in undergrowth on an embankment to the north of Ladywell roundabout in Dundee city centre.

Dundee Police were treating the death as suspicious and have launched a major investigation.

Mum-of-three Mary McLaren was last seen alive two weeks ago after a visit to Fat Sams nightclub in Dundee with her sister.

Forensic examinations continued at the embankment today and tributes from Ms McLaren’s family and friends have been laid at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Shaun McKillop of Tayside Police said: “My priority at the moment is to establish cause of death.

“In order to do this, a detailed and meticulous search of the area where the body has been found will be carried out. We also need to have the body medically and forensically examined.

“Since Mary was first reported missing we’ve had two police family liaison officers working closely with her family keeping them informed on the progress of the enquiry.”

He added: “The family liaison officers spoke to Mary’s family yesterday afternoon and made them aware that a body has been found.

The body has yet to be formally identified and a post mortem was to be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Ms McLaren was last seen in Dundee’s Marketgait near its junction with King Street at around 3am on Thursday, February 25, with a man she met at the club.

After issuing CCTV stills from Ms McLaren’s night-out, officers traced a man seen dancing with her before she disappeared.

Tayside Police said the man was still helping with their inquiries.

The search for Ms McLaren has been called off.
