Rangers in call for 18 teams in the SPL

RANGERS boss Walter Smith has called for the SPL to be expanded to 18 teams.

The SPL have revealed they are considering increasing the top flight from 12 to 16 teams.

But Smith reckons they need even more new sides to enter the top flight.

Smith said: “Sixteen teams only gives you 30 games a season.

“The ideal set up is to have an 18-team league.

“If we could find a way of working towards that, I would be in favour.”

Smith also advocated scrapping splitting the SPL table towards the end of the season.

“Eighteen teams would come into line with all the other European teams.

“It would also mean we don’t have the embarrassment of a split with teams finishing seventh ending up on more points than teams who finish sixth.”
