Aberdeen FC pitch is almost unplayable

Mark’s Pittodrie woe

Published: 04/03/2010

MARK McGhee blamed the poor state of the Pittodrie pitch for the low standard of entertainment in the Hearts game.

The Aberdeen FC boss claimed the damage caused by them having to leave the undersoil heating on during the recent spell of bad weather has made the surface almost impossible to play on.

McGhee said: “The Aberdeen FC players are a lot better than the pitch has allowed them to show.

“It’s been as frustrating for them as anyone else.”

“We’ve now asked them to play in a different way when we are at Pittodrie to see if that will help.

“Rather than give the ball away by making short passes that maybe bobble on the pitch they’ve been asked to play balls in behind the opposing back four for us to run on to.

“Unfortunately, when most teams come to Pittodrie they sit deeper, drop off and defend in numbers to stop us getting room to play those sort of passes.

“It’s meant our lads have then been forced to play the other way at times in an effort to draw teams out and that has been a big factor behind some of the performances being as bad as they have been.

“It’s been difficult for them to be as precise as they need to be with final passes because the ball often bobbles and bounces off in the wrong direction.”

Maybe something to do with the groundsman Mark. Lots of clubs here and south of the border have been in the same predicament. Was in London the other week went to see Fulham play at Craven Cottage. The pitch was like a bowling green.

Yes Colin, the average temperature in Fulham has been very similar to that of the North East over the last months!!

OMG! What other woeful excuses is McGhee going to roll out? The condition of the pitch is exactly the same for both teams Mark. The differentiating factors being that one team wanted to win more than the other and had more skill, passion and desire to win that the other and they played with 10 men for most of the second half!

Skill, passion and desire? Were you watching the same Hearts team as me Mark? They were equally as awful as us, but scored with a flukey overhead kick. The pitch conditions mean that we cannot get the ball down and pass it, which is McGhee's preferred method of football. Looks like we'll have to revert to Calderwood style hoofball from now on.
