SOME restaurants are ideal for a romantic candlelit supper – and some are perfect for a gaggle in search of a party.
Then there are some restaurants that are spot on for a good girly catch up.
And one of those is definitely Yan in Westhill.
The restaurant is bright and open but the tables are almost partitioned off with ferny plants which gave us gossiping gals a bit of privacy.
There are also bigger tables for larger parties – and even a private dining area for those with something to celebrate.
After a bit of an opening gab – and some complimentary prawn crackers – my pal and I perused the packed menu which has a huge selection of Chinese and Thai favourites. I started with Koong Ka Jok See (£5.45) – large prawns wrapped in noodles which are then deep fried.
These scrumptious parcels were unusual and delicious.
The juicy seafood was offset perfectly with the crispy noodles which were accompanied by a Thai mayonnaise which had just a hint of heat.
My friend went for the vegetable spring rolls (£4.45). Crispy layers of pastry were filled with crunchy veg and served with a spicy chilli sauce.
The mains were just as hard to choose from as the extensive selection of starters.
Yan offers everything from duck and seafood to vegetarian dishes and spicy curries.
I went for one of my favourites, honey chilli chicken (£8.45).
Little chunks of meat were bound in a light batter then served with a delicious sauce, which was the perfect balance of sweet and heat, shot through with chunks of crunchy veg and sharp pineapple.
My dining partner went for the sweet and sour chicken (£8.45).
In the Hong Kong-style dish, the chicken was bound in batter then doused in a tangy sauce, which my pal said was delicious.
Along with the meal we ordered a portion of lightly-fried rice (£3) and some yummy noodles (£3).
After stuffing ourselves silly, we were still tempted by the fantastic-looking sweets piled high on the dessert trolley, which is wheeled over to tempt diners. From tiramisu to chocolate meringue the choices looked heavenly – but the mains had finished us off and we had to turn down a pud.
Along with a couple of soft drinks the whole meal came to a reasonable £43.
And the waitresses seemed to understand and left us to our own devices while we supped our coffees and gassed for Aberdeen.
