ITS name refers to a grand hall in Norse mythology where Viking warriors go after they die.
But for the Bassam family, Valhalla has simply meant “home”. This super five-bedroom house in Aboyne has a central location within the village.
And the spacious gardens and proximity to Aboyne Primary School have been ideal for Christopher, 39, and Lisa, 37.
“For me it was the land and the garage that first attracted me to the house,” said Christopher, a rig manager who often works in Africa.
“And for my wife it was the space and the privacy the house offered. I’ve enjoyed the garden when I’ve been home, but the garage is my favourite part.
“One of my hobbies is to buy bike parts and build them, so I’m often in there working when I get the chance.”
A keen member of Deeside Thistle Cycling Club, Christopher has also made the most of the country routes that surround the village and can often be found whizzing along the track to Cairn o’ Mount when he’s home.
As parents to Jessica, 6, and Harriet, 3, Valhalla’s big garden was a bonus for the Bassams.
It stretches to nearly half an acre and the rear garden has a lawn screened by tall conifers.
To the front, the house has a big, sweeping tree-lined driveway and extra privacy comes with the closing of its double wrought-iron gates.
Gardening fans will also enjoy caring for the apple and plum trees in the grounds.
Full-time mum Lisa said: “We’ll take away nice memories, especially of Jessica playing outside.
“The garden is nice and big and also very private, so you can just shut the gates and let the kids play.
“And even though we’re right in the middle of the village, you can’t hear any traffic. It sometimes feels like we’re way out in the countryside, away from all the roads.”
Lisa’s favourite space in the house is the lovely sun room where eye-catching prints of the girls adorn the walls.
South-facing, it’s a light, bright and airy space, perfect for relaxing in the summer months when it gets the most sunshine.
The family also make the most of their elegant, formal dining room where they sit down to dinner together every evening.
And another stand-out feature of the house is the master bedroom which is extremely spacious and has two picture windows.
The master bedroom also has a large walk-in wardrobe, the ultimate luxury for any fashion lover.
Originally from the Durham area, the Bassams first moved to the North-east after relatives came to the region to work in the oil industry.
Now after spells living in both Banchory and Aboyne, they are planning to relocate back to the north-east of England.
“I will be working back in Africa so we are hoping to return to England, so Lisa and the girls can be nearer family.”
