A WOMAN was fighting for her life in hospital today after a crash on the Aberdeen to Dundee road.
The driver had to be cut free from the wreckage after her car careered off the A90 in wintry conditions south of Stonehaven.
Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene of the accident on the southbound carriageway.
Cutting gear was used to free the woman from her car and the A90 was closed for nearly eight hours while police investigators tried to establish what caused the crash.
And moments later another woman was left with serious injuries after a separate one-car crash just 500 yards away.
The road was closed for nearly eight hours while police investigators tried to establish what caused the crashes.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called to two accidents on the southbound carriageway of the A90.
“The first was just after 10.10pm and paramedics took one woman to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. She was thought to be in a critical condition.”
The spokeswoman said the second crash left another driver seriously injured. Around 25 firefighters attended the two crashes, near Temple of Fiddes, and used cutting gear to free the first woman from her car.
Grampian Fire and Rescue Service station manager Stuart Cruickshank said it was a “challenging operation”.
He said: “It was difficult because of the position of the car, which was halfway down the embankment and up against the road signs.”
Mr Cruickshank added the second accident was also serious.
He said: “Firefighters administered first aid until paramedics arrived on the scene.
“The woman was not trapped but her injuries were still serious.”
