The accident happened on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, near Kintore, at 8.10pm yesterday.
The 35-year-old man had to be cut free from his BMW X5 after it collided with a lorry at the Kintore roundabout. He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance with serious back, head and chest injuries.
The Volvo lorry was also damaged along its right side in the accident, but the driver was unhurt.
Grampian Police, Grampian Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service all attended the smash.
A police spokesman said: “The driver of the car was trapped inside the vehicle for some time and had to be cut free. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening.”
