SCORES of schoolchildren in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are to benefit from the generosity of an Aberdeen fundraising group.
Friends of the Special Nursery is to spend money outwith the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital for the first time in its 25-year history.
Friends of the Special Nursery is shelling out £11,500 on Treasure Boxes for 11 schools across the Aberdeen area to help improve the youngsters’ movement..
The boxes, which each cost £700 (+VAT), contain equipment to help improve the youngsters’ movement.
Friends of the Special Nursery chairwoman Gayle Bartlett said she hoped the move would encourage all head teachers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to invest in a box.
She said: “So many children suffer from problems with their motor skills and this will be such a benefit.
“We would love every school in the North-east to have one of these boxes.”
The Treasure Boxes were designed by Peterhead mum Jackie Gray, 44, and her business partner Natalie Zendlerway.
The Treasure Boxes each contain 15 different activities with more than 70 tasks. The activities focus on improving children’s motor skills and include tasks connected with writing, ropes, balls and threading.
Peterhead mum Jackie came up with the idea after realising there was little help for her daughter Kim, 11, who has dyspraxia – a developmental co-ordination disorder.
Schools in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire chosen to each receive a box were Hill of Banchory, Kintore, Chapel of Garioch, Newtonhill, Newmachar, Charleston, Skene Square, Anna Ritchie School, Fyvie, Greenbrae and Kingsford School.
Since the committee was formed 25 years ago, it has raised more than £1.25 million.
