OF ALL the places to sit when you’re looking to shed some festive pounds, next to a conveyor belt of food is probably not the wisest.
So our trip to YO! Sushi was never going to be anything but a gut-buster.
Watching what you eat suddenly takes on a whole new meaning as you keep a beady eye out for the next tasty treat to trundle past your seat.
Tempura prawns? Yes please. California roll? Don’t mind if I do.
In fact, such is the dazzling array of delights on offer at this Union Square sushi bar that there is bound to be something to suit even the pickiest of eaters.
And the clever pricing system – where you can tell how much an item costs by the colour of the dish – makes it easy to keep an eye on how much your spend.
To kick things off we grabbed a salmon sushi and some Edamame (blanched soy beans).
The sushi rolls were firm and packed with filling, and the soy sauce and wasabi on the table added a nice kick.
The beans – a bit of a favourite of my girlfriend’s – were plump and tasty and we chomped through them in no time.
As well as taking any dish from the belt, you can also call on a waitress to order something from the menu.
That’s what we did – and we were soon tucking into salmon and asparagus yakitori, chicken katsu curry and a bowl of miso soup.
The salmon dish was a delicious combination of fish and asparagus skewered together and finished with a soy glaze.
It was tasty, but was trumped by the curry – crispy chicken pieces in a mellow sauce which left us wanting more.
I left my girlfriend with the soup, which was a tad bland for my taste, and went in search of more conveyor belt delights.
Some passing crispy duck dumplings were quickly devoured, along with some spicy pepper squid, which was tangy and tender beyond belief.
I should probably have stopped there, but the smell wafting over from the passing mixed tempura was too good to resist.
Piping hot and in feather-light batter, the mix of crab, black tiger prawn, sweet potato and Japanese chilli was simply delicious.
My girlfriend’s sweet tooth was playing up, so our final choice was mochi – a jelly-like rice cake that freshened up the palate nicely.
Our waitress totted up our dishes, which cost between £1.70 and a fiver, and drinks to give us our final total of £45.25.
It was a price worth paying for such tasty food – and just one look at the mini mountain of plates beside us would tell you how tasty it was!
