COUNCILLORS got stuck in to help gritting crews clear Aberdeen’s streets of thick ice.
Lib Dem Aberdeen City Council leader John Stewart last week pledged to “shovel ice” if the cold conditions continued.
He was joined by SNP councillors John West and Mark McDonald who shovelled truckloads of grit on to Aberdeen pavements.
They tackled Aberdeen streets including George Street, Loch Street and Constitution Court as well as a nearby pedestrian crossing and pavements near Hanover Street School.
The trio spent more than three hours tackling icy surfaces.
But today residents hit out at the Aberdeen councillors, claiming action should have been takenearlier.
Cindy Alexander, 37, of Porthill Court on Broad Street said: “They should have been here doing this about three weeks ago. The state of the roads has been awful.
“A group of the residents here clubbed together to clear it all ourselves.
“We had to – there are some older residents who would struggle to walk on the ice.”
Cllr McDonald said he had already put his name forward to volunteer to clear Aberdeen roads next year.
