WEATHER experts today said the worst of the snow hitting the Aberdeen area was over.
But forecasters warned a big freeze was still on the way.
A Met Office spokesman said he expected the snowfall to peter out by the end of the day, but there were still set to be low temperatures over the weekend and next week.
The warning came as more than 200 schools in the area closed once again and a string of roads were forced to shut.
Peter Sloss, duty forecaster in Aberdeen, said mercury was set to drop to as low as -8C (17F) tomorrow and on Saturday night in Aberdeen and as low as -20C (-4F) in Braemar.
Over the weekend the temperature was expected to be at 0C (32F) in Aberdeen during the day and -7C(19F) further inland.
And on Monday temperatures are set to rise to 3C (37F) although they are due to plummet back down to freezing again overnight.
And the snow and icy weather was again affecting the roads across the region.
Two cars were involved in a crash today on the A90 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh road.
The cars collided at around 6.50am near the Toll of Birness, causing tailbacks on the southbound carriageway of the A90 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh road.
Meanwhile, a bus was stuck on Main Street in Buckie due to the icy conditions.
The A93 Braemar to Glenshee road and the A939 Cockbridge to Tomintoul at the Lecht also remained closed.
Police advised motorists to take extreme care while travelling along roads badly hit by heavy snow overnight.
