JOE McElderry spoke of his delight after bouncing back from his Christmas charts heartache to clinch the New Year no 1.

After missing out on the festive top spot to Rage Against The Machine after a high-profile internet campaign, X Factor champion Joe McElderry hit back by selling more than two-and-a-half times more copies than its rival this week.

The Climb sold 196,000 copies in its second week, compared with 69,000 copies shifted by Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name, which slipped to the second spot.

Joe McElderry, on being told the news, said he was “so happy”.
