United hit out at SFA as Levein leaves for Scotland job

Thompson in a fury over approach

CRAIG Levein was today finally being unveiled as the new Scotland manager.

That’s despite Dundee United accusing the SFA of acting “disgracefully” in its handling of the negotiations over a compensation package for Levein.

But the negotiations are expected to be concluded this morning to clear the way for the SFA to unveil Levein as the successor to George Burley at a Hampden press conference.

But Levein will take over with United chairman Stephen Thompson’s stinging criticism of the SFA ringing in his ears.

Thompson said: “We are a member club and deserve to be treated with a bit more respect.

“We have been treated shabbily because the SFA has yet to make any formal offer to us for compensation.”

Thompson had reluctantly given the SFA permission to speak to Levein and it is understood they will have to pay United around £250,000 in compensation. The United board organised a meeting at Tannadice today to discuss who will succeed Levein.

Peter Houston, his assistant at United, is an option, with Levein likely to ask him to also work part-time with Scotland.

Billy Reid, of Hamilton Accies, Raith Rovers’ John McGlynn, St Johnstone’s Derek McInnes and Shamrock Rovers manager Michel O’Neill are others understood to be in the frame.

Barry Ferguson, meanwhile, has not ruled out a return to Scotland duty under Levein.

The Birmingham midfielder was banned during George Burley’s tenure for gesturing at photographers as he sat on the bench during his country’s World Cup qualifier against Iceland after being dropped for the infamous ’Boozegate’ incident days earlier.

Ferguson said: “It is something I would need to consider but, up until I am asked, my Scotland career is over.”
