A TEENAGER suffered a serious head injury today when his family car skidded off an icy road.

The 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital by police escort, along with his brother and mum, following the crash on the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road.

His 17-year-old brother suffered suspected spinal injuries and his mum, who is in her 40s, suffered a shoulder injury.

His dad, who was driving the silver Citroen Picasso, escaped injury when it plunged down a grass verge.

Fire crews had to prise the roof from the mangled wreckage of the car, which left the road three miles south of Stonehaven just after 9am.

Emergency crews, including an air ambulance, were scrambled to the scene. But the helicopter was forced to turn back as weather conditions deteriorated and freezing fog formed.

Tailbacks built up around the scene and police had to close off the southbound carriageway.

The crash came as the Met Office issued a flash warning of widespread icy roads.

Grampian Police inspector Jim Wood, who was at the scene, said: “The roads have been badly affected.

“The icy conditions have certainly played a part in this incident.”

The road was expected to remain closed until later today as a fleet of gritters were called in to make the route safe.
