The Hatton Mill: Hatton, near Peterhead

THE last thing you would expect when you go out for a pub lunch on a Saturday is to encounter a magic carpet.
But the fabric I found laid out on the lounge floor of The Hatton Mill had a special meaning for me.
It was exactly the same as the one I used to play on at my old living room in Aberdeen’s Stockethill.
I was magically transported back in to the days when I used to sit on the carpet and eat homemade fries.
So what a coincidence when the waitress served me with some gorgeous homemade chips just like mum used to make.
The well-cooked chips were a fitting accompaniment to the crispy battered fish I opted for, which provided a taste sensation. My mate Dave, a Northfield-bred loon, was also chuffed with the “rare” home-fashioned style chips, which he hadn’t had in years – and
he wolfed down his steak pie with vigour.
Sadly, there were no starters available.
The rustic old-fashioned pub has just started selling its unique brand of traditional food and only serves three courses on a Sunday at the moment, the friendly waitress told us.
And Friday and Saturday are the only two other days food are available.
As for price, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the fish and chips were only going to cost £5.50.
The steak pie was just £5.
Even if you don’t think their carpet is magic, you will still be made to feel at home.
