A PENSIONER was in a critical condition today after she was hit by a van in an Aberdeenshire village.
The woman, who was walking to a shop at the time of the accident, was hit by a red Volkswagen van in Strichen just after 6am today.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the woman was in her early 80s.
The spokeswoman said: “She was in a critical condition. She was taken with a police escort to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
“The woman was conscious and breathing at the time of the call but we’re not sure of the extent of her injuries.”
Grampian Police Sgt Allan Wallace said the collision happened as the woman walked by Ugie Motors on Water Street in Strichen.
Sgt Allan Wallace said: “She has sustained leg injuries as a result. At the moment we’re waiting for a condition update to see whether it’s necessary to carry out further investigations.”
The cause of the Strichen crash was not known but a councillor said Aberdeenshire Council may have to look at safety measures on the Buchan road.
Cllr Norman Smith said: “As the main route to Fraserburgh, Water Street is quite busy.”
Emergency services arrived on Strichen’s Water Street at 6.03am and closed the road, the main A981 route from Inverurie to Fraserburgh.
Four police cars were at the scene in Strichen today, along with six police officers, who were directing traffic past the accident scene on the Aberdeenshire street.
The injured OAP arrived at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at 7.25am.
Grampian Police said it was not known when Water Street in Strichen was likely to reopen.
