A MULTI-MILLION pound scheme to improve traffic flow around Aberdeen has moved a step closer to reality.

And Aberdeen city councillors insisted work on a third crossing over the River Don now had to push ahead.

The River Don new bridge, along with a scheme to transform Aberdeen’s Berryden Road into a dual carriageway, would free up city bottlenecks, according to Aberdeen City Council’s enterprise, planning and infrastructure committee convener Kate Dean.

Aberdeen City Council’s plans would see a new bridge built over the River Don to link with Tillydrone.

Vice-convener Callum McCaig of the Aberdeen City Council committee said building a new bridge over the Don would be vital to allow planned improvements at the Haudagain roundabout to work.

But opposition councillors called for the plans for Aberdeen to be scrapped and re-written from scratch.

Cllr Barney Crockett said: “We need another solution that doesn’t bring a whole pile of traffic into areas that already can’t cope at the moment.”

However, fellow Tillydrone representative Cllr Richard Robertson said, although people in the ward were unhappy at the plans, he had a wider responsibility to the people of Aberdeen to support the crossing.

Cllr Dean said: “It seems a little silly or at least unwise that we should go back and revisit the whole proposal from the beginning. To do that would really just be deferring and delaying.”

Aberdeen City Council’s motion to press ahead with designs and costing for the crossing was carried.

Members of Aberdeen City Council also agreed to progress designs for £25 million road improvements to the Berryden corridor, including new bus and bike lanes.
