Smith – Gers can’t handle Euro pressure

Walter’s woe as Rangers crash out of Europe

Published: 25/11/2009

RANGERS boss Walter Smith admits his team cannot handle the pressure of Euro nights at Ibrox.

A 2-0 loss to Bundesliga strugglers Stuttgart sent Rangers tumbling out of the Champions League, and also meant they missed out on the Europa League.

The Ibrox side will finish bottom of Group G regardless of the outcome of their final fixture away to Sevilla.

Smith’s side have conceded 10 goals in the three home games in their Champions League group.

Smith said: “The pressure of having to create at home is something we have not been able to handle particularly well.

“Away from Ibrox, the expectation is not so great in terms of having to go forward and win the game.

“We have really struggled to impose ourselves on games at home. At Ibrox, we have not been good enough in our group.”
