SCOTLAND youth coach Ross Mathie has backed Jack Grimmer to stay on the right path to the Aberdeen FC first team.

Grimmer will skipper the national Under-16 team in the Victory Shield showdown against England tomorrow night.

A win for Scotland at Tynecastle will allow Grimmer to get his hands on the coveted trophy.

It has been a big week for the Aberdeen FC youngster, who also penned a two-and-a-half year professional contract at Pittodrie.

But Mathie insisted Grimmer will not get carried away with his success.

He said: “Jack is showing potential and he is a very good captain for us.

“There were a lot of people who said after the match against Wales that he had a great game.

“But what we have to do is keep ourselves in check.

“Aberdeen FC are happy with him and he is getting good coaching.

“Some players peak at 17 and then for whatever reason drift out of the game.

“I don’t think that will happen with Jack, with the back-up and good coaching he has at Pittodrie.

“I am sure they will keep him on the straight and narrow.”

Mathie claimed the Aberdeen FC youth system is one of the best in the country and is the perfect place for Grimmer to reach his potential.

He said: “Aberdeen FC are one of the finest clubs at bringing through good young players.

“They are unique being up in the North-east corner of Scotland that not only can they get local lads, but they can go further south.

“Aberdeen FC expand their net far and wide. They have a good scouting system. They are renowned for their work with players on the technical side, and also with life skills.”
