Plans for new River Don bridge back on the table

Aberdeen councillors to discuss new proposals

Published:

PLANS for a third River Don crossing have been put back on the agenda by Aberdeen City Council.

Councillors in Aberdeen will now be asked to give the go-ahead for detailed design work on a proposed River Don bridge between Tillydrone and Grandholm.

A proposal to dual a major road in Aberdeen will also go before councillors for the first time.

Aberdeen City Council’s Lib Dem/SNP administration could not include the River Don bridge in Aberdeen’s last local plan because a Scottish Government reporter highlighted a lack of provision for sustainable transport.

But Aberdeen City Council officials have now prepared a package of measures for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.

Plans for the River Don route will be discussed at Aberdeen City Council’s enterprise, planning and infrastructure committee meeting on Thursday.

But Labour councillor Willie Young, who represents Aberdeen’s Bridge of Don, said: “My fears for my constituents are that this crossing will increase traffic causing longer delays, increase traffic using the Bridge of Don as a rat run and, importantly, might threaten property values.”

Aberdeen City Council officers have also asked for the go-ahead to work up detailed proposals to create four lanes on Berryden Road.

The dualling would extend from Aberdeen’s Denburn roundabout through to Great Northern Road. The traffic plan includes stopping cars from using Bedford Road as a through-route.

Included in the proposal was a £500,000 pedestrian and cycle footbridge, over the railway, that would link Aberdeen’s Berryden Retail Park with Leslie Terrace.
