Butchers’ bid to safeguard ‘delicacy’

BUTCHERS are seeking European protection for a Scottish “delicacy” – Lorne sausage.

The Scottish Federation of Meat Traders’ Associations chief Douglas Scott said the time had come to permanently protect the Lorne sausage, named after the late Scottish comedian Tommy Lorne.

A bid is to be made to the European Commission to stop Lorne sausage being made elsewhere in the UK and Europe, giving it the same status as Arbroath Smokies.

Tommy Lorne, a pantomime star in Glasgow in the 1920s, is credited with creating the square and flat Lorne sausage so it could be put into sandwiches.

Aberdeen butcher Andrew Paxton, of Laidlaws in McCombie’s Court, agreed with the bid to protect Lorne sausage. He makes up to 20 batches of 3lb Lorne sausages weekly.

Mr Paxton said: “It’s high time we were doing more to protect our traditional products and our industry.”
