THOUSANDS of shoppers flooded Aberdeen’s Union Square today as it officially opened its doors.

Crowds swarmed into the £275 million Union Square after Hammerson’s chief executive David Atkins cut the ribbon at the main doors.

The 700,000sq ft development has attracted major high street stores to Aberdeen, such as Azendi, Apple and Abercrombie and Fitch. There are also restaurants and a cinema at the Guild Street site, as well as a hotel and 1,700 parking spaces.

As the opening celebration kicked off, there were dancers on show in the main atrium.

One shopper, Joe Garner, 23, said: “It looks really good and it has a good variety of shops and restaurants.”

Some people queued outside the Guild Street shopping centre from 8am in the hope of being one of the first to enter.

Mr Atkins said: “We have opened a lot of centres in the past but the number of people here today has surpassed all of our expectations.”

Meanwhile, Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future (ACSEF) today highlighted the need to keep pushing forward with development.

Tom Smith, chairman of ACSEF, said: “The Union Square development now brings the total of investment in retail, hotel accommodation and other commercial city centre developments to £360 million.

“The time is now right to maximise the benefits of these investments for the region and to attract further investment by ensuring these retail centres are well connected around a vibrant city centre heart.”
