ABERDEEN Art Gallery has secured a piece by artist Tracey Emin.
The gallery in Aberdeen’s Schoolhill is now displaying the pink and blue neon work entitled For You by Tracey Emin in its centre court.
Speaking about the addition to Aberdeen’s collections, Art Gallery and Museums Manager Christine Rew said: “We are delighted to add this tender and poignant piece by one of Britain’s leading modern artists to our collections – thanks to generous assistance from our financial supporters.
“Tracey Emin has been at the forefront of British art for the last 10 years and this acquisition will build on our objective which is to acquire and exhibit the best of contemporary art in Aberdeen.”
Lead Aberdeen City Councillor for culture Martin Greig said: “Tracey Emin is one of the most publicised and talked-about people in the British art world today. The art gallery has made a bold purchase with significant contemporary resonance.”
Tracey Emin, who accepted election to the Royal Academy in March 2007, refers to her neon pieces as “love poems”.
Tracey Emin said: “Poetry can be one line, a sentence. When you read the words you imagine what you’re seeing – you’re given a sense of vision by the words.
“The good thing about neon is it’s not just about the words. It creates an atmosphere.
“Neon makes people feel happier, which is why you see it at fun fairs.”
