Westend Tandoori: Ashvale Place, Aberdeen

I USUALLY treat set menus with the same suspicion as I do pills to make me thinner, or creams for my bald spot.

It just seems you pay a premium for food you don’t want but the kitchen wants rid of.

But Westend Tandoori shattered my perceptions by offering a great choice – and huge portions – for just £23.95.

The chicken tikka starter was tender and smoky. And the generous helping of vegetable pakora were slightly greasy but perfectly fine.

The menu allows you to pick two mains, so I went for the old favourite, a lamb vindaloo. The sauce was rich, deep and thick, but, unfortunately, didn’t have me screaming for the water.

By contrast, the chicken kata masalla was packed with flavour – slightly tomatoey, with citrus and sweetness. But the winner oddly came in a side-dish of bombay potato. Mildly spiced, buttery and garlicky, it was perfect warming autumn nosh. Along with two portions of pilau rice, poppadoms, chutneys and a sweet peshwari naan, this is one deal which – unlike diet pills – is too good to miss.
