Friends spot UFOs flying over Stonehaven

Orange lights seen over town

Published: 21/09/2009

A GROUP of friends have reported seeing a series of UFO’s flying over Stonehaven.

The aircraft enthusiasts and their wives were left “puzzled” by an unexplained sequence of orange lights which passed across the sky above Stonehaven.

They described seeing eight orange balls speeding through the sky at three-minute intervals at the same speed and the same height.

Dan Paton and Graham Philip and their respective wives, Marie and Aileen, had just left the Carron restaurant in Stonehaven when they saw the first of the lights at about 8.30pm.

Mr Paton, curator of the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre, said: “It was an orange light that came towards us, past us and then disappeared. It was moving in a north-west to south-east direction over Stonehaven and out to sea.

“We didn’t think that much about it but then a couple of minutes later another one appeared and another one after that until eight had gone by.”

He said they were definitely not the navigation lights of a plane or helicopter and that they could not have been balloons or parachute flares either.

He added: “I still haven’t come up with an explanation as to what caused it.”

Mr Philip, who is also heavily involved in the museum, said: “I am perplexed. We just don’t know what we saw.”

He added even his wife, Aileen, a physics teacher at Aberdeen Grammar, was confused.

They rang air traffic control at Aberdeen Airport and were told nothing had appeared on the radar.

Hi, We can verify that there were in fact 9 of these. My partner was outside seeing a friend away and was observing the sky for later, as there was due to be a visible pass of the International Space Station. This happens frequently and follows a similar track and visibility fades away as it enters the shadown of earth. The strange thing about the 9 "UFO type" sightings was that the travelled at a similar speed and similar track to the ISS, and also vanished into the earths shadow about the same area. I know none of these were the ISS, as at the time of 20:30 it was around Australia, and passed over UK, and was observed at 21:30. I would love to know what these 9 objects were... as would my partner, his friend, and a few neighbours who also viewed the last few with us. My partner is a keen "hobby" astronomer and has various sofware applications and website access for satellite tracking. None of which gave any indication what these might have been.

i have just been reading your artical in todays evening express regarding the above subject, can you confirm what day this had happened? was it Fri the 18th Sept? I may have the answer to what it was that the Stonehaven residents saw! we may have a photo of the object! Stuart Stephen

Stuart Stephen, I would be interested to know what your explaination is and I would like to compare your footage with the "poor footage" I have. Can you give a brief description of what your thoughts are?

Hi Rachel, i had a party for my mum on friday night and we let go 10 sky lanterns. when they are high in the sky and at a distance they look like they could be something else. I took photos of the sky lanterns!

Hi Stuart, just an observation, you have said that it was Friday night you let go of the 10 Sky Lanterns at a party ? It was Saturday the "Orange Blobs" were spotted over Stonehaven.Do Sky Lanters orbit for 24 hours. We know for def. it was Saturday night as our visitor was here and the neighbours that came out and watched with us, their kids were inside watching the X Factor.

Hi Caralynn, No one has said it was saturday night up until now! Not even the artical in the paper said what night it was. when we read the paper that was the first thing we thought of was the sky lanterns! we are just intrested in what was going on. I metioned the sky lanterns because in the distance they could be mistaken for another object! and we thought it was Friday.

Hi Perhaps the 2 couples that reported could clear up if they saw the "objects" on Friday or Saturday. Rachel says she saw objects on Friday night. Would really like to get to bottom of this to discover what exactly the "UFOs" were :o)

Hello. We are the people who reported to the Evening Express the initial sightings over Stonehaven. We can confirm that this was Saturday evening at 8.30pm. Our son did report seeing laterns over the Police Station on Friday evening. In no way were these "orange balls" to be confused with the laterns on as they were travelling far too fast (the surface wind being 5knots and at 1000ft 15knots), and at a fair height as there was only one cloud in the sky to the west of Stonehaven we noticed that they were under this cloud. On the Sat evening the objects were travelling from NW to SE on the same track at 3min intervals. No military traffic was in this area. So still not answers as of yet to what it was...

Hi Graham, Thank you for confirming which night was which. The "orange blobs" dipped in behind a cloud and popped back out but i do agree about the direction, the time spacings, and the sighting times. They were on the same track as used by the ISS (which was spotted at it's correct time). Partner uses a few "whats in the sky" software programmes which is acurate, and none of those sites had anything listed for passing over on that rough orbit track at that time. Surely it couldn't just have been Stonehaven (or surrounding areas) that saw these "objects". It is a pity that there is not anybody looking into what these "objects" were. If nobody can identify them (or even attempt to) then it looks like we really have seen UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects - and we have the videos and pics to show it. Again thanks for coming back and clearing up the confusion.

Hi Caralynn, It is with a bit of disappointment that the Mearns Leader tonight reports that the mysterious lights in the sky were in fact Chineese Lanterns released in Stonehaven at around the time we reported our sighting. I still can not understand though why a woman in Milltimber reported to the Press that she saw the same lights in the sky as we all did. Also tonight I have learned that a group of campers in Newburgh north of Aberdeen have reported the same lights.Whatever this has generated a lot of interest around the north east. Thank you all also for your input to the above. Graham Philip.

Well, the "lanterns" I had been informed were actually released from Bridge of Don on Friday... so the newspaper report has it completely wrong to report this as the "objects". I also was aware that on Saturday when the "objects" were passing over, they were intermittently being obscured by very high cloud. These were not lanterns.

Hi George it is just a shame that the orange balls have been at the same time as people releasing these lanterns. In fact up until now I had never heard or seen these. In fact I may still have not seen these lanterns. We all too feel that they could not be lanterns as you say like us the observations go against this. ie height, speed, and the various sightings over such a wide area. Graham.

Hi George, i can confirm that, from your video, that is what i seen!! However, i couldn't video it as it was travelling far too fast!! And as for my comment before, i have made a mistake, it was Saturday night that i seen it as was sitting at my window speaking to my sister!! :D

Tonight at approx 23:00 (1st May 2010) I saw several formations of bright orange ligts with absolutely no sound track north to south across Stonehaven. I have never seen anything like it, the track was constant as was the speed and way too faast to be any sort of firework or lantern. I do not know what I saw but I know it was no conventional fixed or rotary wing aircraft. I am flabberghasted, I tried to take some pictures but they were a washout. Anyone else see the same????
